Fabric & Hoop

Use white cotton or linen fabric, tightly hooped in a wooden embroidery hoop (approx. 6 inches).

Stitches Used

  • Satin Stitch: Used for the large star (both blue and red/white sections), small red and blue stars, and the banner line under the text.
  • Backstitch: Used for the “4th of July” text.
  • Straight Stitch: Used for the tiny white stars within the blue section.

DMC Thread Colors

DMC 321 โ€“ Red (flag stripes, small stars, banner)

DMC 820 โ€“ Navy Blue (top half of star, small stars, text)

DMC Blanc or B5200 โ€“ White (flag stripes and small stars)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Transfer the Design: Trace or transfer the star and text pattern to your fabric using a water-soluble pen or lightbox.
  2. Stitch the Star:
    • Use DMC 820 and satin stitch to fill the upper left section of the star (the blue area).
    • Use DMC 321 and B5200 to alternate red and white stripes with satin stitch on the right and lower sections of the star.
    • Use straight stitch with DMC B5200 to create the three white stars on the blue section.
  3. Stitch the Small Stars:
    • Use satin stitch for the small stars around the large star.
    • Use DMC 820 for blue stars and DMC 321 for the red one.
  4. Stitch the Text:
    • Use DMC 820 and backstitch to embroider “4th of July” in a cursive script.
  5. Stitch the Banner:
    • Use satin stitch and DMC 321 to fill in the straight horizontal banner underneath the text.

Finishing

Secure all threads at the back neatly. Gently wash if necessary to remove markings, let dry, and press with a warm iron (face down on a towel). Trim the excess fabric or finish the back with felt if displaying in a hoop.
