A mermaid is a marine creature with the head and upper body of a human being and the tail of a fish. Thousands of legends and sightings of mermaids are recorded in history, including a sighting by Christopher Columbus. These beings are regarded as divine or semi-divine and appear in ancient mythologies and European folklore.
Mermaids are also called sirens and like fairies, are fabled to have magical and prophetic powers.
