The tiger is the largest cat species. They are iconic symbols of power and grace within their native habitats. Tigers are solitary hunters, and most live within specific territories. Their main prey varies by geographic region, but usually include ungulates such as deer and buffalo. They are apex predators, primarily preying on mammals rather than reptiles or amphibians. Because tigers occupy only about 10% of their potential range, their conservation status has been classified as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Tigers have a lifespan of between 15 and 20 years in the wild, but can live longer than 20 years in captivity. They are highly territorial and generally avoid humans. Incidents of tigers killing humans are uncommon, but do occur occasionally.
