Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, but the holiday or dedicated day, depending on your location, stems from different traditions.
In the UK, Mother’s Day is also known as Mothering Sunday and is celebrated on the fourth Sunday during the Christian period of Lent. The tradition was begun during the Middle Ages, when children, of a very tender age, were separated from their mothers in order to work and bring in money for their families. Mothering Sunday was regarded as a day for the family to gather together and honor their moms.
In the USA, Mother’s Day was started by Anna Jarvis, who held a memorial service for her mother on 12 May 1907. Soon other Americans followed her lead, but it was in 1914 that the American president made Mother’s Day a holiday, thus enshrining the tradition in American culture. Mother’s Day in the USA is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. In South Africa, Mother’s Day follows the USA dating system.
