Printing your pattern
Print it out as A4 sheets using Adobe Reader in poster print mode. Select cut marks and tiling on the poster setting in Adobe Reader. Print out the Milkmaid Panel Top in your chosen size. Stick the pattern pieces together at the cut marks using clear tape.
Notions
- 1.5m of stretch knit (jersey) fabric for sizes 30-34. 1.75m for larger sizes. Suitable fabrics are cotton knit, Bon Bon, Viscose Lycra. 0.5m knitted elastic. Sewing thread Sewing needle for lightweight knit fabric Ruler Sewing machines, overlocker, cover stitch and plain machine. Looper or a hairpin to thread your binding through the neckline. Pins or sewing pegs Tailor’s chalk or magic pen Printer Scissors or rotary cutter
Cutting your top
Fold your fabric in half lengthwise. Lay the pattern pieces onto your fabric for the size you need. Lay the bodice section to the fold, cut 1. Lay the center back onto the fabric and fold over on the central line to make the pattern piece whole, cut 2. Cut 2 back side pieces. Mark the back side piece down in length side to the front fold line, cut 2. Mark 1 of the central back pieces down in length to the front fold line and trim. Cut 2 strips along the selvedge to the width of your binder foot or for this example 4.2cm wide.
Sewing your top
Overlock the back together by sewing the side panels to the mid panel. Overlock the bottom section of the front together by sewing the side panels to the back central panel. Mark a nick in the center of the top front bodice section and a corresponding nick on the base section of the front that you have sewn together. Sew the bodice section of the front to the base of the front, right sides together, by easing the bodice section to the base so that the gathers form evenly across the seam (see video). Join the back to the front, right sides together.
Sewing the top
Stitch binding to the underarm and keyhole sections of the top. Cut a piece of 1.5cm wide knitted elastic 4cm smaller than the top of the back section of the top and overlock it in place. Make binding for the straps 1.5m long. Cut the binding in half lengthwise. Immediately next to the binding at the armhole on the back, overlock 2 straps in place. Overlock the top front of the bodice and fold over a 2cm hem, coverstich or use a stretch stitch on your sewing machine to sew the hem. Anchor stitch at keyhole and armhole. Fold elastic over on the back section of the top and stitch. Overlock hem and hem using coverstitch or suitable stretch stitch on your machine. Press the top.
